Soul Band

Robert Smyth Soul Band Liam Wade Albert Hall

Our famous soul band, Soul Patrol, is probably our most well-known ensemble. The band was formed in January 2003, shortly after Mrs Petersen took up the post of Head of Music at Robert Smyth, and has gone from strength to strength during its existence. It’s a 15-piece set up comprising of 4 singers, a horn section (alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax, trumpet, trombone), and a rhythm section (piano/organ, guitar, bass guitar, drum kit, percussion). Weekly rehearsals are run by Mrs Petersen, this academic year on Fridays from 3.15 – 5.00 pm. There is an audition based process at the start of every year for new recruits due to its popularity.

Soul Patrol performs a very wide range of soul and funk covers, from classic soul and Motown tracks by artists such as Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Stevie Wonder to more recent artists. Since 2010 the band has also taken great pride in composing their own original songs, many of which they have received awards for at the Music for Youth National Festival.  As well as annual concerts and competitions Soul Patrol are available to perform at a range of other events. They have performed at weddings, birthdays, Harborough’s Christmas light switch-on and the Royal Albert Hall! To hire the band for a public or private function email eventshire@rsacademy.co.uk for more information.
